Argentina’s AR 5 Banknote Withdrawal Postponed

The Central Bank of Argentina Republic (Banco Central De La Republica Argentina - BCRA) has decided to postpone the withdrawal of AR 5 notes from the circulation for a month. The notes can be used for transactions in Argentina until February 29, 2020.

The measure taken allows businesses to ease all transactions in the financial system and to deposit or exchange the notes in banks till March 31, 2020.

Revised Schedule:

  • AR 5 can be used for all transactions until February 29, 2020.
  • Banks must accept the notes as deposits or exchange them. Several notes collected together can be exchanged for higher-value notes.

The AR 5 banknotes are in circulation alongside a silver coin with the same value. This coin, with a myrtle tree image, will replace the note.

The AR 5 note, issued by General Jose de San Martin in 1998, is of the lowest denomination and is damaged much faster due to overuse.
