Yemen’s Conflict: Both Factions Battle Over Banknotes

Yemen’s warring factions have opened a new chapter in their conflict - a battle over the old and new banknotes which threatens to create two economies in the state.

The Houthi rebels have outlawed the use and possession of the new Yemeni riyal notes issued by its rivals, the internationally recognized government situated in the southern port of Aden.

The Iran-allied Houthis defend the ban as a move against inflation and term it as rampant money printing by the government. The common people are left helpless in the crossfire.

The split has created two currencies, throwing the economy into further turmoil.
