Bank of England to Unveil new 50-pound banknote

The new 50-pound banknote to be unveiled today by the Bank of England will have the face of someone who has contributed to the world of science. During the six-week nomination period, the bank received 227,299 nominations which were closed in December.

The nominations formed a list of 989 eligible names of people who contributed to the UK’s science. They may have worked in any field of science including astronomy, biology, biotechnology, chemistry, engineering, mathematics, medical research, physics, technology, or zoology.

The final decision, along with the concept design for the new note, will be announced by the Bank of England Governor Mark Carney. The new note will be made from polymer. The current 50-pound note of the year 2011, featured the pioneers of the industrial revolution Mathew Boulton and James Watt.
